About FernieFernie is located in the southeastern corner of British Columbia in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Grizzlies are an important part of the Fernie sense of place. The Elk Valley is a primary access point into the wilderness and Fernie is becoming an outdoor recreational pursuits hotspot. Fernie is the gateway to an increasing outfl ow of recreationists moving up the valleys into the major watersheds that support the wilderness that grizzlies depend upon to survive. Since grizzlies are an important part of the Fernie ‘sense of place’, there have been informal discussions over the years about some kind of conservation centre focusing on them. The recent upswing in development in the area, and its potential impact on the grizzly and our communities of the Elk Valley, has prompted the development of the Rocky Mountain Grizzly Centre. |

“Fernie is the perfect place for the Rocky Mountain Grizzly Centre. Our location in the heart of the Rockies makes sense from a geographic and ecological perspective. The centre will be good for the grizzly bear as well as for the economy and profile of Fernie and the entire East Kootenay.”
